Kampong Tanjong Irau

As far back as I remembered, according to my late father, the name “Irau” came from the word “Hirau” which means ignored in Malay. The place was too far deep thru the mangrove and were homes to tigers and other wild animals at that time that no one pays any attention to it. A stretch of road were build, better known as “sungai terus” to the villagers, and the wild animals were flushed out. Soon many came to built houses along the shore line and the kampong’s population grew and hence got it’s name.

The kampong is like an island itself literally, well at least when the tide is high it is. The curling shape of sungai simpang kanan meets the strait of Johor again during high tide makes the kampong like an Island. The boundary or border as you may say it starts after “sungai terus”. The first houses you see will be of Cikgu Ahmad’s on the right and Kim Song’s (our great Singapore’s footballer) on the left. I wish I have photos of my kampong, the place where I grew up.

    1. Assalamualaikum Encik Jmohd,

      Salam hormat,
      Aisha Omar

  5. Hello,

My name is Aisha and I am a history student from Nanyang Technological University. NTU is currently conducting research for a book which aims to document the history and heritage of the archipelago (Nusantara) communities in Singapore.

I am in charge of the research for the Orang Laut community in Singapore. They can be Orang Selat, Kallang, Gelam, Seletar and also trace their ancestry from the Riau islands. Most often, they live in coastal villages in the areas of Changi, Pasir Panjang, West Coast, Bedok, Kranji, Sembawang, Punggol, Woodlands and many more. It is also very common for those of Orang Selat descent to live in the southern islands of Singapore like Pulau Seking, Sudong and Brani.

Hence, I was wondering if you are a descendent of the Orang Laut and whether you know of any individuals who are as such / or used to live in coastal villages in Singapore or in the southern islands. If so, you could contribute in preserving the history of Singapore’s archipelago (Nusantara) communities.

I have attached a poster which will elaborate more about this project. Thank you and I look forward to your reply.

    Regards,
    Aisha Omar
